ebooks: 5 month trial (to be continued in 2008)

QUT Library, on June 6, 2007, embarked on a 5 month trial of a new unmediated method for the leasing and acquisition of Ebook Library (EBL Library) ebooks. The decision has been made to continue with the EBL demand-driven model in 2008.

Approximately 55 000 EBL ebook records from more than 220 academic publishers have been made available in the QUT Library Catalogue since June, 2007.  These records are marked with EBL Rental in one of the Notes fields in the QUT Library Catalogue record.  In addition there are over 1000 records in the catalogue for EBL ebooks that have been purchased.

To locate EBL ebooks relevant for your subject area do a KEYWORD search of the QUT Library Catalogue. For example ebl and “industrial design”.

There are three options for browsing and borrowing the “non-owned” ebooks:

1. Online Browsing: Clients will be able to browse an EBL ebook online for up to 5 minutes without formally borrowing the ebook.
2. Online Lending: A short term loan (STL) is triggered when the client decides to continue reading after 5 minutes of browsing; the client prints or copies from the ebook; or the client creates notes in the ebook. For every STL that is triggered the library will pay a loan fee.

3. Offline Lending (downloading): The client may also check out and download an ebook to their PC or PDA for typically 1day or 7days.

If an EBL ebook accrues 4 STL’s the ebook will be automatically purchased (on the 5th STL). QUT Library will then own a copy of the ebook.
