New World from Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry’s design for the New World Symphony in Miami Beach is opening next week.

Nicolai Ouroussoff writes that the building “spills over with populist ideas, sometimes to the point of distraction.”

“The symphony center, which overlooks the rambling new SoundScape park designed by the Dutch firm West 8, is the centerpiece of a 15-year effort to rejuvenate a depressed area of Miami Beach midway between the bustling pedestrian shopping strip along Lincoln Road to the south and the convention center to the north.

Frank Gehry asks “Then what?”

I would like to bring you a range of interesting and relevant talks from the people at TED, who are devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TED started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader covering additional areas such as business, IT, and science. The website is a forum for sharing the presentations of experts from all of these fields and the commentary can be considered useful for enthusiasts, students, researchers and academics alike.

To get the ball rolling I will start with a very interesting video talk between Richard Saul Wurman and architect Frank Gehry, who shares his take on the power of failure, his recent buildings, and the all-important “Then what?” factor.

“A living legend, Frank Gehry has forged his own language of architecture, creating astonishing buildings all over the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, and Manhattan’s new IAC building.”   www.ted.com
